Event Horizon

Were you to take a rocket and hover
right at the edge of a black hole,
Your friend Penelope (thousands of miles away)
would never see you fall inside
because the light from you
would never reach her.

Hawking says that sometimes
a particle escapes
but that's pure speculation
since that can never be
observed by anyone.

But, isn't it then wonderful?
to find that just like nothing can outrun a photon,
and time moves in only one direction,
you always travel steadily, inexorably, inescapeably,
towards your very own unique future.
